Philodendron gloriosum is a terrestrial aroid native to Colombia and other parts of tropical Central and South America, prized for its large, velvety, heart-shaped leaves. Mature foliage can become impressive, with a deep green surface, prominent pale veins and a soft texture that gives the leaves an almost luminous appearance. Unlike many familiar Philodendrons, gloriosum isn’t trying to climb a tree. Understanding that difference is a big part of growing this plant successfully.
Gloriosum is a crawler. Its thick stem, or rhizome, naturally travels horizontally across the surface of the growing medium, producing roots and a new leaf as it advances. A moss pole isn’t necessary and can work against the way the plant naturally wants to grow. A longer rectangular planter can be especially useful because it gives the rhizome room to continue moving forward without quickly reaching the edge of the pot. With enough room, useful light and an established root system, successive leaves can become substantially larger.
For natural light, start Philodendron gloriosum approximately 1–3 feet from an east-facing window or 2–4 feet from a west-facing window. Philodendron gloriosum prefers approximately 800–1,500 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. Useful light helps support increasingly large leaves, shorter, sturdier growth and a strong root system. Window direction and distance are starting points because trees, overhangs, neighboring buildings, window size, season, screens and glass can all change how much light reaches the plant.
If you’re using grow lights, choose a 5000–6500K full-spectrum grow light positioned approximately 10–14 inches above the top of the canopy as a starting point, aiming for approximately 800–1,500 foot-candles at the foliage. Kelvin tells you the color of the light, while foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. Gloriosum eventually occupies quite a bit of horizontal space, so the light should cover the entire growing area rather than concentrating over a single leaf. As the rhizome crawls forward and new foliage develops, move or adjust the fixture so the newest growth remains within that useful light zone.
Water when your plant needs watered. Allow the root zone to use some of its available moisture before thoroughly watering again, while avoiding a dense mix that remains saturated for long periods. An airy, well-draining aroid mix works well for the roots, but placement of the rhizome matters too. Keep the crawling stem at or near the surface rather than burying it deeply in the mix. As it travels forward, new roots can establish beneath it and support the increasingly large foliage above.
Read the direction of the rhizome as closely as you read the leaves. If the growing tip is approaching the edge of the container, that is your cue to give the plant more room rather than waiting until it has grown completely outside the pot. Progressively smaller leaves, increasingly long petioles or growth strongly reaching toward the light are reasons to check how much useful light the plant is receiving. An older leaf declining isn’t automatically a problem. Look at what the newest leaves, roots and advancing growth point are doing.
Success looks like a healthy rhizome steadily crawling forward, establishing roots as it travels and producing increasingly substantial leaves. New foliage should continue opening with the characteristic velvety surface, strong heart shape and prominent venation. With enough horizontal growing room, useful light and a healthy root system, Philodendron gloriosum can develop from a relatively compact young plant into a wide, dramatic specimen with enormous foliage.

Let customers speak for us
from 1006 reviewsVery happy with this company and everything I've ever ordered from them. One of my top nurseries to order my plants from! They take amazing care of my future plants 😁
Every plant I get from Mel at Rooted is so happy when they arrive. Such great quality and happy plants!
I don’t even know where to start describing how impressive my experiences have been ordering plants from this shop!
First, my very first order came with a complimentary learning volume on the life cycle and how to eliminate fungus gnats in your plant collection. That alone was worth shopping there. It’s absolutely refreshing to find a retailer who wants your plants to actually be healthy, knowing they could be losing a guaranteed revenue stream simply by not continuing the propaganda or selling the “fixes”.
Next, the plants I ordered were stunningly beautiful, healthy and pest free! They were so well packaged that there was minimal foliage damage, despite the second box actually arriving damaged from transit. My plants were perfect.
The shipping information is well explained before you purchase and the packing materials are very high quality.
Any additional questions I had were answered so quickly and I was pleasantly surprised to discover a bonus plant which I had won in a giveaway nestled in with the ones I purchased!
I’m probably done ordering plants for the season since it is starting to get really cold here in Colorado, but the personal attention, the genuine care and the highest quality plants have earned The Rooted Plant Shop a customer for life in me!
The initial reason I ordered in the first place was because the prices were great. That is still an important thing, I’m frugal and love a deal, but it was so dramatically overshadowed by every other wonderful thing I almost forgot to mention it!
Mell is the best she knows her plants she will also tell u the plant we r looking for if it's for us or not. That's what I love bout her she isn't forcing u to take the plant she is helping u with the plants...
I’ve been wanting a silver dragon and when she got here she was perfect! Thank you Mel!
plants are beautiful and full!! Packing was superb. Super glad ive found this shop. Will be a regular customer!
I ordered the $40 mystery box for a west facing window. It was the first mystery box I had ever ordered and had no idea what to expect. To my joyful surprise, I received a huge dieffenbachia neon panther. She's gorgeous and very healthy. If you're on the fence about buying from this shop, order and have no worries. This is my 4th plant from here and each one has been beautiful and healthy. Definitely recommend this shop!
