Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.

Farfugium japonicum ‘Firefly’, native to Japan and Korea, is a bold foliage plant known for its large, glossy, round leaves splashed with bright yellow speckled variegation. The leaves are thick and leathery with a reflective surface, creating a strong contrast between the deep green base and the “firefly” spotting. It grows in a clumping, upright form, staying full and structured while adding a bright, tropical look.

Light should be bright but gentle to protect the variegation. Place it in an east or north-facing window where it gets steady light without direct sun hitting the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. Too much direct sun can scorch the yellow-speckled areas, while too little light will cause the variegation to fade and the plant to thin out.

Watering should stay consistent with slightly higher moisture than most houseplants. Keep the soil evenly moist, never soggy and never fully dried out, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark to keep airflow while holding moisture. If leaves begin to droop while the soil is still wet, it points to excess moisture at the roots. If new leaves are coming in smaller with less variegation, it is not getting enough light. Crisping edges while the leaf stays firm often indicate dry air or inconsistent watering rather than overwatering.
