Epiphyllum Curly 4” ‘Orchid Cactus’

Epiphyllum 'Curly', Curly Orchid Cactus or Curly Sue Orchid Cactus, is a tropical epiphytic cactus that grows attached to trees in the rainforests of Central and South America. Unlike desert cacti that live in hot, dry conditions, Epiphyllums grow in humid forests where their roots cling to bark and organic debris. Curly is prized for its dramatically ruffled, twisting stems that create a cascading, sculptural appearance even when not in bloom. Mature plants can produce large, fragrant flowers that open at night, making them highly sought after by collectors.

Place Epiphyllum 'Curly' within 1–3 feet of an east-facing or south-facing window. It enjoys bright light but appreciates protection from intense afternoon sun, especially indoors. Under grow lights, use a full-spectrum bulb in the 5000K–6500K range. High-output lights should be positioned 8–12 inches above the foliage, while medium-strength lights work best at 10–14 inches. Too little light often results in weak growth and fewer blooms, while adequate light encourages stronger stems and flowering.

Water when the root zone is approaching dryness, never on a schedule. Use a chopstick, moisture meter, or clear nursery pot to determine moisture levels before watering. Unlike desert cacti, Epiphyllums prefer a bit more moisture and do best in a chunky mix of equal parts succulent soil, coarse orchid bark, and perlite. The twisting stems should remain firm and plump. Wrinkled stems often indicate the plant has become too dry, while soft, yellowing growth can signal the roots are staying wet too long. Good airflow and a slightly snug pot often encourage the best growth and flowering.
