The Dog Tail Cactus (Cleistocactus straussii), also known as the Silver Torch Cactus or Trichocereus straussii, is a striking cactus species native to South America, particularly the Andes mountains. This cactus is admired for its long, spiny, silver-green stems and vibrant red or pink flowers that appear in the warmer months. The plant’s unique appearance and ease of care make it a popular choice for succulent and cactus enthusiasts.
Care Guide for Dog Tail Cactus (Cleistocactus straussii):
Light:
- Bright, direct sunlight: The Dog Tail Cactus thrives in full sun or bright, direct light. It needs at least 4–6 hours of sunlight a day to grow well and produce vibrant flowers.
- Indoor placement: If growing indoors, place it in a south- or west-facing window where it will receive plenty of light. Lack of sufficient light may cause the cactus to become leggy or weak.
Watering:
- Infrequent watering: As a cactus, the Dog Tail Cactus prefers to dry out between waterings. Water deeply when the soil has completely dried out, typically once every 2–3 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Less frequent in winter: During the colder months, the plant enters dormancy and requires even less water. Water sparingly, only when the soil is completely dry.
- Good drainage is crucial: Always ensure the pot has good drainage, as cacti are particularly prone to root rot if left in soggy soil.
Temperature:
- Warm conditions: Dog Tail Cactus prefers temperatures between 70–90°F (21–32°C) during the growing season. It can tolerate higher temperatures but should be protected from cold.
- Avoid freezing: It’s sensitive to cold and should be kept in a location with temperatures above 50°F (10°C). Frost or cold drafts can damage or kill the plant.
Soil:
- Well-draining soil: Use a cactus or succulent mix, or create your own by adding sand or perlite to regular potting soil to ensure excellent drainage. The Dog Tail Cactus is susceptible to root rot if the soil retains too much moisture.
Fertilizing:
- Feed during the growing season: During the spring and summer, feed the cactus with a diluted, balanced fertilizer or a cactus-specific fertilizer once a month. Reduce fertilization in the fall and winter when the plant is dormant.
- Avoid over-fertilizing: Excess fertilizer can lead to weak growth and spindly stems.
Potting & Repotting:
- Repot every 2–3 years: Repot the Dog Tail Cactus when it outgrows its pot or if the soil becomes compacted or depleted of nutrients. Choose a pot that’s 1-2 inches larger than the current one.
- Choose a pot with drainage: Like most cacti, it’s essential to use a pot with drainage holes to prevent excess moisture from accumulating and causing root rot.
General Care Tips:
- Handling: The spines of the Dog Tail Cactus can be sharp, so handle it carefully or use gloves when touching it. The long, trailing stems can be delicate, so avoid putting too much weight or stress on them.
- Flowering: The cactus typically flowers in the spring or early summer. The bright red or pink flowers can appear near the top of the plant and are a beautiful, fleeting display. To encourage blooming, ensure the plant gets enough light and has a period of slightly cooler temperatures at night.
- Pests: While the Dog Tail Cactus is relatively pest-resistant, it can occasionally attract mealybugs or scale. Check the cactus regularly for pests, and treat with insecticidal soap if necessary.
Common Issues:
- Yellowing or soft stems: This is often a sign of overwatering or poor drainage. Ensure the soil dries out completely between waterings, and check that the pot has adequate drainage.
- Leggy growth: If the cactus isn’t receiving enough light, it may become leggy, with elongated stems and a lack of compact growth. Move the plant to a sunnier spot.
- Drooping or wilting: If the cactus appears droopy or shriveled, it might be underwatered. Water it thoroughly and ensure it gets enough sunlight to perk up.

This was my first time ordering a plant online, and I would definitely do it again!

I had to wait until today to offer my review because my shipment didn’t come until today. The plants(3) were well secure in the shipping box. Great idea to tape all the plants to the box so they won’t shift. The plants themselves were well wrapped for their safety. The plants arrived in good shape.

Such a healthy, robust specimen. The color is gorgeous, a peach with pink and orange hues! The owner is a delight.

My new Money Tree was delivered in perfect condition! Very grateful for all the advice. Thank you, Melanie!
