Broad, velvety leaves patterned with alternating bands of light and deep green give this prayer plant its unmistakable zebra-striped appearance. The markings radiate outward from the center vein while the soft surface of the foliage gives the color a depth that smoother-leaved prayer plants do not have. Native to southeastern Brazil, Goeppertia zebrina is still widely known by its former name, Calathea zebrina, and can develop into a surprisingly substantial floor plant as the foliage matures.
This is a rhizomatous, clumping plant that produces new leaves directly from growing points at the base. Fresh leaves emerge tightly rolled and gradually open into broad oval blades held on long upright petioles. Established plants can reach approximately 2–3 feet tall and spread outward as the rhizome produces additional growth points. It does not climb and needs no support. Its leaves also reposition themselves in response to the daily light cycle, so foliage rising and lowering between day and night is normal behavior.
For natural light indoors, place it 1–3 feet from a north-facing window or 2–4 feet from an east-facing window. It prefers approximately 300–700 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. This species naturally grows beneath a tropical forest canopy, but that does not mean it should be placed in a dark corner indoors. If new leaves become progressively smaller, petioles become increasingly long and weak or growth slows significantly, increase the usable light. If the exposed portions of the foliage begin looking washed out or develop bleached areas, the plant may be receiving more intensity than it can comfortably use.
Under a grow light, use a full-spectrum 5000–6500K fixture positioned approximately 12–18 inches above the canopy, aiming for 300–700 foot-candles at the leaves. Kelvin describes the color of the light, while foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. Because an established Zebrina develops a broad canopy, even coverage becomes increasingly important as the plant grows. Raise or reposition the fixture as new leaves extend above the older foliage rather than allowing the tallest leaves to grow directly into the light.
Water when your plant needs watered. Zebrina does best when the root zone retains some moisture between waterings rather than repeatedly becoming completely dry, but that does not mean keeping the substrate saturated. Its fine roots and rhizomes need both moisture and oxygen. Use a loose, moisture-retentive mix containing quality potting material with additions such as fine bark and perlite or pumice. Water quality can also become visible along the large leaf margins. If mineral or salt buildup is contributing to repeated browning, filtered, distilled or rainwater can be useful.
The large, soft leaves make changes relatively easy to see. Normal prayer movement changes with the light cycle, while leaves that remain tightly rolled or curled during the day deserve a closer look at the root zone, recent watering, temperature and how quickly the plant has been drying. Crispy edges are not automatically a humidity diagnosis. Repeated dryback, root stress and water quality can produce similar clues. Yellowing combined with substrate that remains wet for a long time is a reason to inspect the roots and reconsider how quickly the plant is actually using water. Watch the newest leaves especially, because they give you the clearest picture of what the plant is experiencing now.
Success looks like increasingly substantial leaves emerging cleanly from the base, sturdy petioles and new growth points gradually widening the clump. Mature foliage should display the broad, velvety surface and strong zebra pattern that make this species so distinctive. Older leaves will eventually decline as they are replaced, so judge the plant by the direction of its newest growth rather than expecting every leaf to remain perfect. A Zebrina producing full-sized new leaves and steadily expanding from its rhizome is showing you that its environment is working.

So happy to support this business! The plant I received is beautiful and I love it. And the customer service was so friendly!
