The unusual yellow flowers are what make this Bird of Paradise different from the familiar orange-flowering form. Each bloom combines golden-yellow sepals with a vivid blue-purple tongue, creating the same distinctive bird-shaped flower in an entirely different color combination. This cultivar was developed at Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in South Africa through years of selective breeding from rare yellow-flowering plants. Originally released as ‘Kirstenbosch Gold’, it was renamed ‘Mandela’s Gold’ in honor of Nelson Mandela. The species itself is native to South Africa.
Growth develops from thick underground rhizomes that produce multiple upright fans of foliage, gradually creating a substantial clump. The long leaf stalks hold broad, paddle-shaped leaves and mature plants can reach approximately 4–6 feet tall. New shoots can emerge around the base as the rhizome expands. It does not climb and does not need a moss pole or other support. Flowering generally comes with maturity rather than while the plant is still small, so the large tropical foliage is the primary feature while a young plant develops.
For natural light indoors, place it directly in a south-facing window or directly in a west-facing window. It prefers approximately 2,000–4,000 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. Bird of Paradise is a high-light plant, and strong usable light becomes especially important if flowering indoors is the goal. If new growth becomes increasingly stretched, leans strongly toward the window or successive leaves become smaller, check how much light is actually reaching the foliage. Plants accustomed to lower light should be gradually acclimated when moved into substantially stronger sun.
Under a grow light, use a full-spectrum 5000–6500K fixture positioned approximately 8–12 inches above the canopy, aiming for the same 2,000–4,000 foot-candles at the leaves. Kelvin describes the color of the light, while foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. Because this plant can become tall and broad, the fixture needs to provide useful light across the developing canopy rather than illuminating only a small portion of the tallest leaf.
Water when your plant needs watered. During active growth, allow it to use a good portion of the available moisture before watering thoroughly again. Its thick rhizomes and substantial roots do not benefit from remaining continuously saturated, so use a well-draining mix that retains some moisture while still allowing oxygen through the root zone. A larger, actively growing plant in strong light can use considerably more water than the same plant during periods of slower growth, so check the root zone rather than watering according to a schedule.
Watch the newest growth for changes in the plant’s environment. Strong new leaves should emerge upright and gradually unfurl into full paddle-shaped blades. Progressively smaller leaves, increasingly stretched growth or strong leaning toward the light can indicate that it needs more usable light. Natural splitting along the leaves is common as the foliage moves and ages and does not automatically indicate a problem. If the root zone suddenly remains wet much longer than usual, look at changes in light, temperature and active growth before adding more water.
Success looks like strong upright fans, substantial new leaves, healthy roots and additional shoots developing as the rhizome expands. Flowering indoors requires a mature plant and very strong light, so lack of flowers on a young plant is not a sign of poor health. As the plant reaches maturity under supportive conditions, the yellow-and-blue flowers become the feature that distinguishes ‘Mandela’s Gold’ from the familiar orange Bird of Paradise.
