Anthurium hookeri ‘Variegated’ is a bird’s-nest–type Anthurium prized for its long, glossy leaves marked with unpredictable cream, yellow, lime, and lighter green variegation. What makes this plant special is the combination of bold coloration and its upright rosette growth habit. Instead of climbing, the leaves emerge from a central crown and create a wide, tropical fountain of foliage, with each new leaf capable of producing a completely different variegation pattern.
Light is important for supporting the variegated foliage and strong, compact growth. Place it in an east or south-facing window where it receives bright, consistent light without prolonged harsh sun hitting the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 10–14 inches from the top of the plant. In lower light, growth slows and new leaves may remain smaller, but the amount of variegation is ultimately determined by the plant’s variegated tissue rather than light alone. Heavily variegated plants need particularly good light because they have less green tissue available for photosynthesis.
Allow the soil to partially dry between waterings, then water thoroughly and let the excess drain away. Use a well-aerated mix of 1/3 succulent soil, 1/3 coarse orchid bark, and 1/3 grade 3–4 perlite. Keep the central crown above the soil line and avoid allowing water to remain trapped in the center. Moderate to higher humidity can support larger foliage and clean new-leaf development, but good airflow around the crown and root zone is equally important.
Watch the crown and newest leaves for its clearest signals. Firm upright growth, increasing leaf size, and a healthy central growth point indicate that the plant is establishing well. Yellowing lower leaves while the root zone remains wet or softness developing around the crown can signal excess moisture. Drooping foliage paired with a dry root zone indicates it is ready for water. Variegation can change significantly from one leaf to the next, so a greener leaf does not automatically indicate insufficient light, and heavily cream or yellow sections may naturally brown sooner because they contain less chlorophyll.
