Tradescantia Nanouk is a cultivar of Tradescantia (commonly known as spiderwort) that was developed in the Netherlands by plant breeders. It was introduced to the market by the renowned horticultural company, Green Wishes, in 2012.

The Tradescantia genus itself is native to the Americas, with many species found in regions ranging from the southern United States to Central and South America. Nanouk is a relatively recent addition to this genus, specifically bred for its striking purple, white, and green variegated foliage, making it a favorite in houseplant collections.

So, while the Tradescantia genus has been around for centuries, the Nanouk cultivar has only been available for about 12 years.

Tradescantia Nanouk is a popular, low-maintenance houseplant known for its striking, colorful leaves. Here's how to care for it:

Light:

  • Prefers bright, indirect light but can tolerate moderate light conditions. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves.

Watering:

  • Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. It’s important not to overwater, as it can lead to root rot. Reduce watering in the winter months when the plant is less active.

Humidity:

  • Thrives in moderate to high humidity. If your home is dry, consider misting the leaves, using a humidifier, or placing the plant on a humidity tray.

Temperature:

  • Prefers temperatures between 60°F to 85°F. Keep it away from drafts or cold windows.

Soil:

  • A well-draining potting mix works best. A general-purpose potting mix with added perlite for extra drainage will keep the roots healthy.

Fertilizing:

  • Feed with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter months.
  • Prune regularly to keep the plant bushy and to remove any leggy growth. You can propagate the cuttings in water or soil.

Repotting:

  • Repot every 1-2 years, or when the plant outgrows its pot, to refresh the soil and give the roots more space.
