Each plant is unique. Size, shape, fullness, and variegation will vary.
Glossy, exceptionally dark foliage gives Super Nova its dramatic appearance, while much lighter new growth creates a striking contrast every time the plant produces another flush. New compound leaves emerge green and deepen considerably as they harden, eventually joining the dark established foliage. Super Nova is used as a trade name for this dark ZZ, but its origin and cultivar history are not as clearly documented as Raven ‘Dowon’, so it is better defined by the characteristics the plant actually displays rather than assigning it an unsupported breeding history.
New growth begins from thick rhizomes below the soil rather than branching from existing foliage. Each spear that emerges eventually opens into one compound leaf carrying rows of thick, glossy leaflets. As the rhizome system expands and creates additional growth points, the plant gradually develops into a dense upright clump. It does not climb or need support, and visible growth can happen in distinct bursts separated by surprisingly long periods when the plant appears to be doing very little.
For natural light indoors, place it 1–3 feet from an east-facing window or 2–4 feet from a west-facing window. Aim for approximately 500–1,000 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. It can tolerate lower light, but expect both growth and water use to slow considerably as usable light decreases. The dark mature foliage is not something you need to create by exposing the plant to intense light. New foliage naturally begins greener and darkens as it matures.
Under a grow light, use a full-spectrum 5000–6500K fixture positioned approximately 10–14 inches above the canopy, aiming for 500–1,000 foot-candles at the leaves. Kelvin describes the color of the light, while foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. Provide enough usable light to support the rhizome system and substantial new growth rather than trying to force darker coloration with excessive intensity. If a new spear emerges much greener than the rest of the plant, give it time to mature before assuming anything has changed.
Water when your plant needs watered. Allow substantial dryback before watering thoroughly again. Thick rhizomes and fleshy roots act as water-storage structures, allowing the plant to continue drawing on moisture after the substrate has begun drying. Use a loose, fast-draining mix with plenty of coarse bark, pumice or perlite and a container with drainage. When repotting, position the rhizomes at or very near the soil line rather than burying them deeply. As the plant becomes established, rhizomes may enlarge and push upward until portions become visible at the surface. If they are firm and healthy, they do not need to be continually covered with additional substrate.
Pay particular attention if a plant that normally holds itself firmly upright suddenly begins collapsing. Healthy rhizomes should feel firm and substantial. When the root zone remains wet for too long, roots can deteriorate and the rhizome itself can begin to rot. Once that happens, the foliage supported by that rhizome may yellow, soften or collapse from the base. If collapse occurs while the substrate is still wet, inspect the underground system before reaching for the watering can. A soft or mushy rhizome is a very different signal from a healthy firm rhizome simply becoming visible near the soil surface.
Success looks like firm rhizomes, sturdy upright foliage and periodic new spears expanding the clump. The contrast between lighter new growth and extremely dark mature leaves is part of this plant’s normal development. Super Nova does not need to grow continuously to be doing well. Strong established foliage, healthy rhizomes and occasional bursts of new growth tell you far more than the number of days since its last new leaf.
