Moss ball, also known as Marimo or Cladophora ball, is relatively easy. These aquatic plants are low-maintenance and thrive in a variety of environments. Here are some key steps for proper care:

Water Quality

  • Freshwater: Moss balls need clean, dechlorinated water. Tap water often contains chlorine, which can harm them, so use filtered or bottled water if possible. If you’re using tap water, let it sit for 24-48 hours to allow chlorine to dissipate.
  • Temperature: They prefer cool to moderate temperatures, typically between 65-75°F (18-24°C). Avoid placing them in direct sunlight or extreme heat.

Lighting

  • They thrive in indirect, low to moderate light. Too much direct sunlight can lead to algae growth, while too little light can cause them to lose their vibrant green color.

Water Changes

  • Perform a water change every 1-2 weeks to maintain water quality. Gently rinse the moss ball in water to remove any debris and dirt.

Rotation

  • Moss balls can flatten over time, so rotate them every week or so to ensure they grow evenly and maintain their round shape.

Cleaning

  • If algae starts growing on your moss ball, gently scrub it with your fingers or a soft brush. You can also rinse it in clean water to remove any dirt.

 Container

  • Marimo balls do well in glass containers, aquariums, or vases. Ensure that the container is large enough for them to float or roll around and have space to grow. Keep them in a spot with indirect sunlight for the best results.

Feeding (Optional)

  • Moss balls don’t require regular feeding, as they absorb nutrients from the water. However, if you’re keeping them in a planted aquarium, the nutrients in the water from fish waste can be sufficient.
