Maiden Hair -Rough
Consider the medium-sized maidenhair fern if you're looking for a lush perennial plant to grow in damp conditions underneath the dappled light of your shade trees in woodland gardens. Also known as the rough maidenhair because of its textured foliage, the colorful fronds on this type of fern make it stand out from the crowd. As new fronds unfurl, they showcase unique rose-colored shades which turn dark green, sometimes with a bronze tinge, as the arching foliage matures.
The maidenhair fern is ideal for adding elegant, textural interest to your houseplant collection in colder regions. That's if you can provide the indirect light, high humidity levels, and even moisture they thrive on.
Here are the main care requirements for growing maidenhair ferns:
- Position in dappled light for healthiest growth.
- Plant in well-drained soil, rich in organic matter.
- Water deeply to retain even moisture without waterlogging.
- Provide adequate humidity when grown indoors.
- Feed a balanced, diluted fertilizer during the summer growing season. Feed carefully—too much fertilizer can lead to foliage burn.

from 37 reviewsI was leery of shipping this plant, however it arrived in perfect condition, travelling from Michigan to California, and was even blooming when it arrived! I am so pleased with this as it was a gift for my niece. I will happily ship a plant from The Rooted Plant Shop again!
We had a great time with friends and new friends. Laughter, coffee, and Plants, BEAUTIFUL plants 🪴 ❤️
I enjoyed meeting Melanie, and she was very helpful in what I needed to do. I really appreciated having someone like her to help me! She was professional, friendly and very easy to talk to and ask questions.
Plants came beautifully packaged and fast. Each plant was healthy and a great addition to my collection. Thank you!
She arrived well packaged along with my other two plants. She is full and healthy! So glad I purchased her!
Love my new fern! She made it to her new home safe and sound. The Rooted even messaged me about what day they were shipping out making sure it was a day the weather wasn’t so hot the plant would scorch. Definitely recommend!
This was a very fun workshop to attend! I learned a lot about different varieties of carnivorous plants, while getting to build my own beautiful carnivorous terrarium! The 2 plants I chose are thriving, and definitely helping with the gnat population in my house.
I am thrilled with my mystery box plants, fantastic experience as usual (I’m a repeat buyer and love getting plants I wouldn’t normally think of purchasing. Love! Thank you so much.
Very happy with the new addition to my collection. Plant is a good size and appears to be healthy. Would order from her again.
