Tacca chantrieri, commonly called bat plant, is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia known for its dramatic, bat-shaped flowers with long, whisker-like bracts that can extend several inches below the bloom. What makes this plant special is its unique, almost otherworldly flowers paired with large, soft green leaves that give it a bold, collector-level presence. It grows from a rhizome and can produce multiple blooms under the right conditions.

Light should be bright but filtered to support flowering without stressing the foliage. Place it in an east or north-facing window where it gets steady light without direct sun hitting the leaves. Under grow lights, use 5000K–6500K placed 12–18 inches from the top of the plant. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, while too little light will reduce or stop flowering.

Watering and environment need to stay consistently moist with high humidity. Keep the soil lightly moist at all times, never soggy and never fully dried out, using a mix of succulent soil, perlite, and orchid bark that holds moisture while staying airy. If the plant is not producing blooms, it is often not getting enough light or humidity. If leaves begin to droop while the soil is wet, it points to excess moisture at the roots. Crisping edges or stalled growth often indicate low humidity rather than watering issues.
