Some vines may produce nearly white leaves while others carry heavier green patterning, so the plant can look different from one section to another. It is a variegated cultivar of Hoya carnosa, a species native to eastern Asia and parts of the western Pacific, and its combination of waxy foliage, colorful new growth and long-lived flowering vines has made it a classic Hoya.

Growth is naturally vining and climbing. Flexible stems can trail from a hanging basket or be trained around a trellis or other support, and long exploratory vines with few leaves are normal while the plant searches for somewhere to climb. Mature vines can also produce clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers from short flowering structures called peduncles. Those peduncles can flower repeatedly, so they remain part of the plant after the individual flowers have finished.

For natural light, start approximately 1–2 feet from an east-facing window or 1–3 feet from a west-facing window. Aim for approximately 1,000–2,000 foot-candles at the leaves. Foot-candles simply tell you how much light is actually reaching your plant. Useful light supports compact growth, flowering and the green tissue that supplies energy to the highly variegated foliage. Too little light can result in increasingly long spaces between leaves, slower growth and reduced flowering.

Under grow lights, use a 5000–6500K full-spectrum grow light approximately 8–12 inches above the canopy as a starting point, aiming for approximately 1,000–2,000 foot-candles at the foliage. Kelvin tells you the color of the light, while foot-candles tell you how much light is actually reaching the plant. As vines travel beyond the original pot, light coverage becomes important because a long vine can quickly grow outside the strongest part of a small fixture. More light supports the plant’s growth, but it does not create or guarantee additional white variegation.

Water when your plant needs watered. The thick leaves store water, so allow the root zone to dry substantially before watering thoroughly again. An airy, fast-draining mix allows the roots to receive a complete watering while still returning to an oxygen-rich environment afterward. Long vines do not necessarily mean the plant needs a larger pot. Root development, rather than the length of the foliage above the pot, is the better guide for deciding when additional root space is actually needed.

Read the leaves and vines together. Firm, substantial foliage generally accompanies a well-hydrated plant, while leaves may become less rigid as stored water is used. Increasingly long spaces between leaves or weak growth can be a reason to check available light. Pink new growth is normal, as is considerable variation in the amount of cream, white and green from leaf to leaf. Highly white portions contain little chlorophyll, so occasional decline of extremely pale tissue does not automatically indicate a problem with the entire plant.

Success looks like sturdy vines carrying thick foliage, active new growth and increasingly established branching. Once mature and growing in a supportive environment, flowering peduncles and repeated clusters of fragrant blooms can become part of its regular growth cycle. Healthy roots, firm foliage, compact growth and continued production of its characteristic green, cream, white and occasionally pink leaves are strong signs that it is growing well.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0572/1269/8722/files/40C734D1-24BB-46EE-873D-C68297D48BBA.jpg?v=1791381078
