Beavertail Cactus (Opuntia basilaris) is a striking, low-growing cactus native to the arid regions of the southwestern United States. Named for its wide, flat, paddle-like pads that resemble a beaver’s tail, this cactus is covered in fine, short spines called glochids instead of large needles. In spring, it bursts into bloom with brilliant magenta-pink flowers that sit atop the pads like bright crowns, attracting pollinators and adding vibrant color to desert landscapes or sunny indoor spaces.

Beavertail Cactus thrives in full sun to very bright direct light. Outdoors, it can take intense, direct sunlight all day long. Indoors, place it in the sunniest window you have—preferably a south-facing one. If grown in low light, the plant may become leggy, dull in color, and far less likely to bloom. During its growing season, which runs from spring through summer, giving it ample light is essential to maintain its shape and encourage flowering.

To keep your Beavertail Cactus happy, plant it in a gritty, fast-draining cactus or succulent mix. Water sparingly—only when the soil has completely dried out, and even less often in the winter months when the plant is dormant. Overwatering is the quickest way to cause root rot. This cactus is drought-tolerant and prefers dry air, making it a perfect low-maintenance plant for hot, dry climates or indoor areas with strong light and good airflow. With the right care, it will reward you with years of hardy growth and stunning spring blooms.
